Sammy the Sea Turtle
Howdy! As one of Sandy’s best friends, I thought I would introduce myself. My name is Sammy and I’m a leatherback sea turtle. I’m called a leatherback because I have a soft "leathery" shell instead of a hard bony one. I’m one of the oldest reptiles on earth, and one of the most endangered. I’m very big in size. At six feet long and four feet wide I weigh over 1,000 pounds. But, don’t let that intimidate you because I’m a very gentle creature. I like to swim in the ocean and spend most of my time there. I usually take a vacation in Florida every summer where I meet up with the rest of my family. I only get to see them once a year so our reunion is a big deal.
Sandy and I met at Galveston Bay last year when he accidentally pinched me. I forgave him, and we’ve been friends ever since. My favorite hobbies include diving and surfing. My favorite color is green and my favorite food is peanut butter and jellyfish sandwiches. I hope you have a great summer. I have to go now, I must start my long journey to Florida. Maybe I’ll see you in Galveston this fall. Please, come to visit me soon.
